We are immensely proud of our continent’s great athletes who produced outstanding performances at the world stage last year. The highlight in 2016 was the Olympic Games, however, members of the LEN Family can all recall the fond memories of the European Championships held in London (swimming, diving, synchro), Belgrade (water polo) and Hoorn (open water), all brought fantastic efforts from the athletes as well as from the respective events’ organisers.
Now it’s another time to hail the athletes, on the occasion of publishing the winners of the 2016 LEN Awards. No one might argue that the sculptures go to European greats who truly deserved to be honoured for their brilliant results. We only feel sorry for many others who would also be entitled to achieve the awards, but as usual in sport, there can only be one winner.
The good news is that in this ‘competition’ the athletes ranked second, third or even fifth in the voting almost all were champions, too, in the various events. This is another fine proof how high the European athletes reached in 2016.
On behalf of LEN, let me congratulate all award winners and everyone who appeared on the shortlists in the five disciplines. Many thanks for all coaches, federation staff members and officials who contributed to the success of the athletes and the events. I hope we can enjoy the same successful campaigns in 2017 in all fields.
All the best and good luck for all LEN Family Members!
